India, Italy urge citizens to leave Iran amid US strike threat and spreading protests
India and Italy have urged their citizens in Iran to leave immediately as fears of a possible US attack and widespread protests heighten security risks across the country.
India and Italy have urged their citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible, citing growing security concerns amid rising regional tensions.
Italy’s foreign ministry said on Thursday it had advised Italian nationals residing in Iran to depart without delay, warning that the situation could deteriorate rapidly.
The ministry said more than 600 Italian citizens are currently in Iran, most of them based in the capital, Tehran.
Iran has experienced months of internal unrest marked by protests, crackdowns and heightened political uncertainty, raising concerns among foreign governments about the safety of their nationals.
Regional tensions have also intensified due to fears of a potential military confrontation involving the United States, Israel and Iran, prompting several countries to reassess travel and security risks.
In its statement, Italy said more than 900 members of its armed forces are deployed across the region, including about 500 in Iraq and 400 in Kuwait, where precautionary measures have been taken to protect personnel.
Italy also condemned violence inside Iran and called for the protection of protesters, urging authorities to respect fundamental rights and freedoms.
The warnings came as Iran temporarily closed its airspace for more than five hours amid fears of a possible US military strike, underscoring growing instability in and around the country.
Meanwhile, Iran warned that US military bases across the region, including in Qatar, could be targeted, as Washington partially withdrew personnel amid rising tensions.
