Seven people, including one woman, flogged in Herat, Afghanistan
Seven people, including one woman, were sentenced in Herat to one year in prison and more than 30 lashes each.
The Taliban’s Supreme Court announced that seven individuals, including one woman, were flogged in Herat province for charges including extramarital relations, sodomy, and theft.
The punishments, confirmed in a Thursday statement, took place in the districts of Adraskan, Pashtun Zarghun, and Shindand, according to the court’s release.
Each of the seven individuals was sentenced to one year in prison in addition to receiving more than 30 lashes, the statement said.
The Taliban recently carried out similar punishments in Ghazni province, where four individuals were publicly flogged for alleged moral and criminal violations, reflecting the group’s strict interpretation of Islamic law.
Over the past ten months, Taliban summary courts have reportedly tortured and punished more than 800 individuals, according to human rights organizations, raising international concern over the group’s treatment of civilians.
These punishments highlight the enforcement of the Taliban’s harsh justice system, which relies heavily on public corporal punishment and extrajudicial measures in areas under their control.
The recent floggings in Herat underscore the continued crackdown on social and moral conduct by the Taliban, drawing condemnation from human rights groups and observers.
