Iran Judiciary Chief Calls For Swift Executions Of Detained Protesters
Iran’s judiciary chief said detained protesters should be executed swiftly, raising alarm among rights groups as unrest continues and international pressure on Tehran intensifies.
Iran’s judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said detained protesters should be executed swiftly, signaling a harsher crackdown as nationwide unrest continues.
The Associated Press reported on Wednesday, January 14, quoting Ejei as saying trials and executions of arrested protesters would be carried out soon, without specifying timelines or legal details.
“If we are to act, we must act now,” Ejei said, adding that delaying executions by months would reduce their impact, according to the report.
The remarks have heightened fears among rights groups and activists, who warn that Iran’s judiciary is accelerating punishments amid mounting international scrutiny.
Iranian authorities have previously defended the crackdown by blaming what they describe as foreign-backed unrest, while offering limited transparency about arrests and legal proceedings.
The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) says more than 2,500 people have been killed during the protests, making them among the deadliest episodes of unrest in Iran in years.
U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Washington would respond if Iran begins executing protesters, while Iranian pop icon Googoosh has urged immediate international action to support Iranians and stop the killings.
The threat of executions has intensified global concern, with analysts warning that further violence could deepen Iran’s isolation and fuel wider instability as protests show no sign of fading.
