Thyolo, January 13, Mana: Vendors and small-scale business operators in Thyolo have expressed satisfaction over the first 100 days of President Professor Peter Mutharika’s administration citing improvements in education, price stability and availability of essential commodities.
In interviews conducted by Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Tuesday, the traders said the new administration has begun implementing key manifesto commitments.
Motorcycle mechanic, Julius Makunganya, said the introduction of free secondary education has eased the financial burden on parents.
“Our children are now going to school without being sent home for fees, something we never thought would happen so quickly. This has helped many families and reduced school dropout in our area,” said Makunganya.
Shop owner, Mayeso Kawale Chibwana, said price stability has improved business planning for both traders and customers.
“Prices of most goods have remained the same for months, unlike before when they changed frequently. This helps us and our customers to plan our budgets better,” she said.
Plastic ware vendor, Elicy Langwani, of Nchilamwera said the reduction in maize prices has helped small businesses survive.
“Last year we were buying maize at high prices which forced us to spend almost all our earnings on food. Now maize is cheaper, and we can reinvest in our businesses,” said Langwani.
Kabaza operator, Madalitso Joseph, of Thyolo Boma said the steady availability of fuel has lowered transport costs and increased customer demand.
“Fuel is now readily available, which has reduced fares and brought back customers who had stopped using motorcycles,” said Joseph.
Group Village Headman Chibwana of Traditional Authority (TA) Nchiramwera commended government for reducing fertilizer prices but called for improved security.
“The affordable fertilizer has encouraged farmers to prepare for the farming season. However, we appeal to police to increase patrols in communities to curb crime,” he said.
