Minister Ben Phiri Warns Chiefs to Stay Out of Partisan Politics
Minister of Local Government Ben Malunga Phiri has warned traditional leaders across the country that government will remove any chief found engaging in partisan political activities, saying such conduct undermines community development and public trust in traditional leadership.
Phiri delivered the warning on Tuesday during a meeting with Mchinji District Council officials, where he stressed that chiefs are expected to remain neutral and serve all members of their communities without political bias.
He said government is committed to preserving the integrity of traditional leadership and will take decisive action against any chief who violates this principle.
During the same engagement, the minister directed all councils to adopt digital systems for local revenue collection by April 1, arguing that the continued use of manual collection methods has contributed to revenue leakages and poor financing of development projects.
He claimed large portions of locally generated funds are lost through abuse by some duty bearers.
Chairperson for Mchinji District Council, Councillor Kennedy Peter Chipanga, highlighted staffing challenges within the council, noting that many positions remain filled in an acting capacity, a situation he said is affecting service delivery.
Meanwhile, Senior Chief Mduwa urged the council to manage the K5 billion Constituency Development Fund prudently in the upcoming financial year. Phiri echoed the call for accountability, warning that mismanagement of CDF resources will result in prosecution.
