Working in collaboration with Lilburn Police Officers, firefighters executed two sweeps of the home in a search for victims. One was found in the entryway of the home, but no additional victims were present at the time.
Per the statement, a neighbor told first responders that the man became aware of the fire and helped his mother escape to safety before returning to go after the family’s pet. However, “he succumbed to the smoke conditions” upon his reentry.
First responders reported that only he and his mother were in the home at the time of the fire. An investigation into the cause is still ongoing.
However, the fire department noted that “no smoke alarms were active at the time of the fire.”
“The house sustained extensive fire damage to the garage, main living area, and attic. Extensive water and smoke damage was found throughout the main living area,” the statement read, noting that firefighters and one police officer were treated with “minor injuries” on the scene before being released.
One victim was treated with “life-threatening injuries,” and another was “assessed and released at the scene.”
It is currently unclear if the man was able to rescue the family’s dog. It is also unclear how his mother is doing and if she sustained any injuries.
Just Jared contacted Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services for updates on the investigation but had not heard back at the time of publishing.
