Aaron Rodgers Addresses Retirement Decision After Steelers' Playoff Loss
Aaron Rodgers' 2025 season is officially over. Is it the end of his Hall of Fame career as well?
Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers came crashing down to Earth Monday night, losing 30-6 to the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card round. It was the seventh-straight postseason loss for the franchise dating back to the 2017 AFC Championship Game.
Rodgers, 42, finished the night with a pick-six in his final pass attempt. The four-time MVP has contemplated retirement before, and his future was unsurprisingly a topic of discussion after Monday's game.
Rodgers not interested in 'emotional' decision
No one actually thought Rodgers would reveal his intentions in the aftermath of a blowout playoff loss, but you knew he'd be asked about retirement.
By the sounds of his comments, a decision is going to take some time.
“I’m not going to make any emotional decisions at this point," Rodgers said, via Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein. "Such a fun year. A lot of adversity, but a lot of fun. Been a great year overall in my life in the last year, and this is a really good part of that, coming here and being a part of this team. So it's disappointing to be sitting here with the season over.”
Rodgers also noted his desire to “just get away and then have the right conversations" before making his choice.
A fourth quarter to forget
Very rarely do players get a Hollywood ending. If this was Rodgers' final act as an NFL player, his last stanza was one to bury from memory.
With the Steelers trailing 10-6 early in the fourth quarter, Rodgers was sacked and fumbled, with Texans defensive lineman Sheldon Rankings picking up the loose football and returning it 33 yards for a touchdown.
Later, with the score 24-6, Rodgers was intercepted at midfield by Houston's Caden Bullock, who ran the theft back 50 yards for a score on what would be Rodgers' last pass attempt of the night, and possibly his career.
Backup quarterback Mason Rudolph came in for Pittsburgh's final drive. Rodgers finished with a stat line of 17-of-33 passing for 146 yards.
“Against a good defense like this, you’re not going to get many opportunities,” Rodgers said. “When you get them, you got to make the most of them.
“We just didn’t make the most of any of the little opportunities.”
