Pregnancy Center Group Helps 500,000 Women, Saves Thousands of Babies From Abortions

More than a half-million women facing unplanned pregnancy have been served by the life-affirming resources made possible through Real Alternatives over the last 30 years.

Real Alternatives released the statistic that 505,000 women in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana have received care and support from centers that receive Real Alternatives support. Real Alternatives is a non-profit charitable organization that administers pregnancy and parenting support programs in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana, seeking to secure state funding for pregnancy centers, maternity homes, and other programs that help women choose life for their babies.

This new statistic comes two years after Real Alternatives funding was cut in Pennsylvania by Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro. Seven million dollars was cut from pregnancy centers in the Keystone state, forcing some centers to close their doors, said Real Alternatives CEO Kevin Bagatta.

Prior to Shapiro’s action, Real Alternatives funding was also cut in Michigan in 2019 by Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Despite these setbacks, the numbers do not lie, Bagatta. He said Indiana’s Real Alternatives program is “growing by leaps and bounds.”

“That state really did it right,” Bagatta said, recognizing a bill benefiting comprehensive women’s programs from 2022. House Bill 1001 gave $58.5 million to programs that families in need, including pregnancy centers.

“We are very proud to be a part of that,” he said. “They tripled our funding.”

Bagatta provided the Indiana Program Report to Pregnancy Help News from 2025. In the fiscal year ending 2024-2025 there was a 33 percent increase in total women served in pregnancy centers in Indiana in comparison to 2022-2023, and a 49 percent increase in number of visits to centers. Real Alternatives has been serving Indiana for 11 years.

In addition to the half-million Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana women served, Bagatta said Real Alternatives assisted a program in the Lone Star state which has since reached over 600,000 women.

“Altogether that is $1.1 million served with taxpayer dollars for life,” Bagatta said. “The beauty of that is that it is a performance driven fund, not a grant. Our service providers earn every penny they receive.”

Bagatta noted the evolving task of serving women despite the denial of funds from blue pro-abortion states.

“With the abortion pill (so prevalent), the clinic is now at the end of the driveway in the mailbox,” he said. “We have to get to that woman.”

Since Shapiro’s Real Alternatives cuts in Pennsylvania, Bagatta said he gets asked often about what is happening there for those centers impacted.

“Pennsylvania was the pioneering program.”  said Bagatta, whose office is in the capital city of Harrisburg.

Real Alternatives began under the governorship and support of Bob Casey, Sr., a pro-life Democrat, in the 1990s. The elder Casey, whose son Bob Casey, Jr. is a pro-abortion Democrat and previous senator for the Commonwealth, spoke at a Real Alternatives banquet many years ago. The Real Alternatives program served women for the longest length of time in Pennsylvania.

The removal of funding in the founding state felt like a slap, Bagatta said. Shapiro, Bagatta said, went into his new role as governor that year with support from Planned Parenthood.

“They asked him for five things, and we were the third,” he said.

Some of the centers who received the Real Alternatives funding have since shut down, he said. Many of these centers had numerous locations and were forced to pare down their number of offices.

“We still do marketing for our Pennsylvania service providers,” Bagatta said. “What we do in Pennsylvania is continually fundraise. We’re still feeding clients through their doors with donors.”

The loss in Michigan was after three years of Real Alternatives serving 9,000 women by aiding pregnancy centers.

Bagatta said until pro-abortion governors are voted out of office, these centers will need to rely solely on donor support. Donors can donate to Real Alternatives directly to distribute the necessary funds needed.

Bagatta said he knows despite the setbacks, that pregnancy help continues to shape lives. He noted the Charlotte Lozier Institute’s recent report affirming that 98 percent of pregnancy help clients nationwide were satisfied with their pregnancy center visits.

Bagatta said it was not long ago when he visited a pizzeria in Harrisburg for lunch when the owner asked what Bagatta did for a living. The Real Alternatives CEO explained the efforts to get tax dollars to help women in an unexpected pregnancy feel they do not need to have an abortion. He mentioned the pregnancy center right there in town.

An 18-year-old male employee tossed Bagatta’s pizza across the counter as the owner said, and pointed to the teen, “My wife and I went there to get help with him. They really helped us.”

Bagatta said as he ate his pizza that day, he thought, “What an odd place to get affirmation.” He said he wished Shapiro would stop for a slice of pizza and talk to the young man whose life was saved by the city’s pregnancy center.

“We have this good news in Indiana,” Bagatta said, “But Pennsylvania is something we mourn.”

She has served as a client services director at her local pregnancy center since 2018. She and her husband are raising four teenage daughters, which include a set of triplets.
