Thuchira Estate Owner Leston Mulli Decries Looting, Vandalism
Leston Mulli, owner of Thuchira Estate, has condemned a wave of unrest that erupted at his property this morning, leaving the estate damaged and several items stolen.
According to Mulli, angry community members broke into a warehouse, stole goats, cattle, fertilizer, and maize, and damaged the estate gate and signposts.
“This is really bad. Some police officers were injured while trying to restore order,” he said.
The unrest, Mulli explained, followed the estate’s decision to invite police to enhance security after repeated illegal cutting of trees in the estate’s forest reserve.
The forest is a critical water catchment area that supplies the Phalombe Major Water Scheme.
Police reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the crowd after residents mobilized in protest, following the arrest of some individuals who had encroached on the estate to produce charcoal.
Phalombe Police Public Relations Officer, Jimmy Kàpanja, confirmed the incident but said more time was needed before releasing additional details.
Mulli described the situation as “worrisome,” warning that continued vandalism and theft could have serious consequences for both the estate and the surrounding community.
Traditional Authority Nyambalo has also called on authorities to act swiftly, emphasizing that ongoing tree cutting threatens the water supply for the major water scheme.
