Trump threatens 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran
U.S. President Donald Trump said countries that continue trading with Iran will face a 25% tariff, intensifying Washington’s economic pressure campaign.
U.S. President Donald Trump said countries that continue trading with Iran will face an additional 25% tariff, escalating Washington’s economic pressure campaign.
Trump announced the decision late Monday, January 12, on his Truth Social platform, saying the measure was final and would take effect immediately.
He said the tariffs are intended to punish not only Iran but also nations maintaining commercial ties with Tehran despite U.S. sanctions.
The United States has long used tariffs and secondary sanctions to deter countries from doing business with Iran, targeting its oil exports, banking sector and shipping industry.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have remained high amid disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional influence and domestic human rights concerns.
Trump has previously criticised Iran’s handling of protests, accusing authorities of violently suppressing demonstrators and warning of stronger international consequences.
The White House has not yet detailed how the new tariffs will be enforced or which countries may be most affected.
The move is expected to heighten diplomatic tensions and complicate trade relations as allies and partners weigh compliance with the latest U.S. pressure measures.
