Germany expects U.S. to back Denmark in Greenland security, Merz says
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the United States is expected to continue supporting Denmark in protecting Greenland as talks on cooperation continue.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he expects the United States to continue working alongside Denmark to help protect Greenland, as talks continue on the exact shape of that cooperation.
Speaking in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, Merz said Germany and Denmark are holding detailed discussions aimed at strengthening security arrangements around Greenland, with U.S. involvement seen as an important element.
He added that negotiations are ongoing and that clearer details on how Washington will participate are expected to emerge in the coming days and weeks.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, has gained growing strategic importance due to its location in the Arctic and its proximity to key shipping routes and military corridors.
Melting ice in the Arctic has increased global interest in the region, prompting NATO members and European states to reassess security, surveillance and defence cooperation there.
Merz said Europe’s approach is focused on cooperation rather than confrontation, stressing coordination with allies to ensure regional stability.
The remarks come as European countries seek to expand their security presence in the Arctic amid rising geopolitical competition.
