‘Denmark hasn’t treated them well’: Congressman writes plan to make Greenland the 51st American state
President Donald Trump for years since his first term in office has considered the acquisition by the United States of Greenland, a territory of Denmark, important to America’s international security.
There have been some extreme ideas discussed, including a military takeover, and also cash payments to residents in order to persuade them to vote for the annexation of their own country.
Now one plan has been put onto paper: The suggestion from U.S. Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., for Greenland to become America’s 51st state.
“I think it is in the world’s interest for the United States to exert sovereignty over Greenland,” Fine told Fox News Digital.
“Congress would still have to choose to make it a state, but this would simply authorize the president to do what he’s doing and say the Congress stands behind him. And then it would expedite it into becoming a state, but it would still be up to Congress about whether to do that,” Fine said.
A report at Fox explained Fine is introducing legislation that would authorize Trump to do what he needed to acquire Greenland.
Secretary of State Marco earlier confirmed he had meetings scheduled with officials from Denmark soon to discuss Greenland.
The location is of strategic importance to the United States, and there already have been links, as Fine said.
“Their poverty rate is high. Denmark hasn’t treated them well. When war came to town, Denmark couldn’t protect them. Guess who protected Greenland during World War II? We did.”
Republicans in Congress understand the priorities but the report noted they were “rattled” when White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt recently did not rule out military action on the island.
Fine said a voluntary relationship would be best.
Congress, under the Constitution, has the power to add states to the union.
