'Susie Wiles must be thrilled': Trump's 'Fed crisis' adds to White House headaches
The Department of Justice's decision to pursue criminal charges against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has derailed White House plans for an affordability-focused speech scheduled this week, as the administration grapples with mounting controversies.
According to Politico's Playbook, Trump planned a major speech on factories and trade in Detroit on Tuesday as part of his "affordability tour." The Powell prosecution announcement has mired the White House in a "Fed crisis" as some Republicans and Wall Street executives express concern, and stock markets showed signs of increased volatility.
The report notes that this latest development — joining recent headlines including the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, Trump's threats toward Greenland, and the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minnesota — will again distract from White House messaging focused on cost-of-living concerns.
Politico reporters Jack Blanchard and Dasha Burns questioned the timing of the prosecution. Powell's term expires in May, raising the question: "So why not wait?"
The journalists joked that the already embattled White House Chief of Staff Wiles "must be thrilled,” that this week’s messaging has a new crisis that will "hang over it all.”
