Left Riots Again: The Winter of Good Is Turning Into the Summer of George Floyd 2.0

Rioting broke out this week following an ICE officer’s shooting of Renée Nicole Good in self-defense. The left has blamed President Trump for the resulting chaos and violence, even as it is the left that is perpetuating it by interfering with ICE operations, attacking ICE agents, and engaging in organized rioting.

Anytime conservatives point out that the left is more violent and responsible for more riots, the response is immediate: January 6. That was one day and one riot, five years ago, which most conservatives openly condemn. Meanwhile, the left has carried out thousands of riots over the past five years, causing billions of dollars in property damage, injuring civilians and police officers, and resulting in several deaths.

The only other event the left points to is the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in 2017, which was not a riot. There was little to no property destruction, no looting or arson, and few arrests. The violence stemmed from confrontations between opposing groups.

By contrast, left-wing riots have repeatedly involved mass property destruction, arson, the seizure of parts of cities, blocking traffic, fighting with police, and attacks on federal buildings, often without provocation.

Taken together, the scale of left-wing violence over the past five years is staggering. Conservative estimates indicate more than 2,000 riots, at least 42 deaths, and over 16,700 arrests. More than 2,000 police officers have been injured, with at least 624 arsons, 97 police vehicles burned, and over 2,300 looting incidents documented.

Property damage alone is estimated at $1–2 billion from the George Floyd riots in 2020, the highest in U.S. history, with tens of millions more from later anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles and additional destruction in Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle’s CHOP zone, and Atlanta’s “Cop City” unrest. These figures reflect only documented incidents, meaning the true totals are likely higher.

During the 2025–2026 anti-ICE riots, liberal activists and civil rights groups organized at least 1,000 events under the “ICE Out For Good” banner. Tens of thousands marched through Minneapolis, while thousands more marched in New York, Los Angeles, Portland, Philadelphia, Houston, and Boston. Los Angeles anti-ICE riots (June 2025): police made 378+ arrests. Costs totaled $32 million, with $29 million for police response. Rioters looted 23 businesses and injured 5+ officers, and property damage included vehicles set on fire.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said crowds scrawled graffiti and damaged windows at the Depot Renaissance Hotel. A gathering at the Hilton Canopy Hotel began as a noise protest but escalated as more than 1,000 demonstrators converged. Demonstrators broke into The Depot in downtown Minneapolis, tossing furniture and spray-painting anti-ICE messages on windows. O’Hara said one officer was struck by a piece of ice, though no other officers were injured.

In Sacramento, protesters pushed open the gates of the John E. Moss Federal Building, caused damage, and left graffiti. Police made 29 arrests at the Hilton Canopy Hotel in Minneapolis and detained and released at least 30 people during Friday night protests. Portland reported at least 79 arrests. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested multiple people after responding in riot gear to a protest outside the Metropolitan Detention Center.

In 2023, during the Atlanta “Cop City” protests, left-wing activists attacked police officers with rocks and Molotov cocktails and set fire to construction equipment. Authorities arrested several individuals on terrorism charges.

In the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in 2020, nationwide protests and riots erupted on an unprecedented scale. Between May 25 and July 31, approximately 8,700 protest events occurred across more than 2,000 cities in all 50 states, with authorities declaring 574 of them riots involving violence or criminal acts. By June 8, at least 19 people had been killed, and at least 42 people died in riot-related violence between 2020 and 2023.

Arson, vandalism, and looting between May 26 and June 8 caused an estimated $1–2 billion in insured damages, the highest level of destruction from civil disorder in U.S. history, surpassing the 1992 Los Angeles riots. More than 2,000 law enforcement officers were injured during the ten-week period, including nearly 400 in New York City and 130 in Chicago.

Police made at least 14,000 arrests nationwide by June 22, with Major Cities Chiefs Association member agencies reporting 16,241 arrests overall, nearly 17 percent for felonies and 7 percent involving violence. Authorities also documented 624 arsons, 97 burned police vehicles, and 2,385 looting incidents.

Another activity unique to the left is the declaration of autonomous zones, where protesters block off parts of a city and claim them as their own. In Seattle, protesters established the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) on June 8, 2020 as a self-declared autonomous zone. Multiple people were killed in altercations before police cleared the area on July 1, 2020.

This episode closely mirrored the autonomous zones that emerged during the George Floyd riots, most notably Minneapolis’s George Floyd Square, where activists maintained barricades for more than a year and restricted police access despite repeated shootings and rising crime. Similar zones appeared nationwide, including Seattle’s CHOP/CHAZ, New York City’s City Hall occupation, Washington, D.C.’s briefly attempted “Black House Autonomous Zone,” Portland’s PKAZ, and attempted zones in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Richmond, Nashville, and Asheville.

Not that a liberal would read this article, but if they did, they would respond, “But January 6…”
