The No. 1 Transfer Recruit in the Country Announces Decision
The NCAA transfer portal is roaring, and on Monday, former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt, the top transfer recruit in the country, made his decision.
Leavitt, who is the No. 1 overall player in the portal according to 247Sports and ESPN, is reportedly headed to LSU. ESPN's Pete Thamel broke the news earlier today.
"Leavitt’s pick comes after trips to Kentucky, Tennessee and Miami," Thamel writes.
Leavitt is LSU's new leader under Kiffin
LSU also landed a commitment from Elon transfer quarterback Landen Clark over the weekend, but Leavitt would immediately vault to the top of a depth chart that to be completely rebuilt following Garrett Nussmeier's departure to the NFL and the transfers of Michael Van Buren Jr. and Colin Hurley.
LSU, under the direction of new head coach Lane Kiffin, also recruited Cincinnati's Brennan Sorsby and Washington's Demond Williams Jr. News about their pursuit of the latter leaked while Leavitt was on campus for a visit, leading to speculation that the Tigers ruined their chances with the preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
Instead, Williams elected to remain at Washington, and with Sorsby picking Texas Tech, the door opened for Leavitt to head to Baton Rouge.
What does Leavitt bring to the table?
A native of West Linn, Oregon, Leavitt began his college career at Michigan State in 2023 before transferring to ASU.
In 2024, he threw for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions while leading the Sun Devils to the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff. Injuries hampered Leavitt's production in 2025, leading to season-ending surgery.
For his college career, he's thrown for 4,652 yards, 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while adding 816 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Leavitt's commitment boosts LSU into the No. 1 spot in 247Sports' transfer portal team recruiting rankings.
