Tech Entrepreneur and CEO Fell to His Death on Mt. Shasta
Every January, we share a tribute to members of our community who we lost last year. Some were legends, others were pillars of their community, all were climbers. Read the full tribute to Climbers We Lost in 2025 here.
Matías Augusto Travizano, 45, September 12
Matías “Mat” Augusto Travizano was generous. An Argentinian and Bay Area resident, he once lent out his apartment to young tech engineers who were new to the country and unable to find a place to stay. When his neighbors reported that Mat was running an illegal Airbnb—which he wasn’t—he was promptly evicted.
“To this day, I can’t believe he never got angry with us about it,” close friend Manuel Araoz remembered in a post on his website.
On the morning of September 12, 2025, Travizano fell 2,000 feet to his death while descending Mount Shasta’s Clear Creek Route. He was 45.
According to eyewitnesses, Travizano found himself off route due to poor visibility and fell out of control while glissading down the Wintun Glacier. It was not Travizano’s first time snow hiking or mountaineering, but it was his first time on Mount Shasta.
Friend and entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky told The New York Times that Travizano was an experienced hiker and that they had plans to meet in Mendoza, Arizona, to hike in December.
Travizano was the founder and former CEO of GranData, an AI-powered analytics company, as well as an investor and tech entrepreneur. He described himself on LinkedIn simply as “Builder.”
Travizano is survived by his wife, Kristen Durham, and his son, Kai.
