Creighton’s Greg McDermott says ‘St. John’s being relevant has done wonders for our conference’
By JAMES MADDEN
St. John’s picked up its second consecutive win on Saturday, defeating Creighton 90-73 on the road in Omaha. The Red Storm, who have struggled at times this season with guard play, have now won back-to-back road games in Big East play, improving to 11-5.
Following the meeting between the teams, St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino and Creighton head coach Greg McDermott exchanged compliments about each other’s long and successful careers.
Pitino talked about McDermott and Creighton postgame, calling the long-time head coach one of his favorite coaches in the game.
McDermott countered Pitino’s compliment by talking about how impactful the revival of St. John’s has been to the Big East.
“After you kick somebody’s tail, you’re usually their favorite coach,” McDermott told reporters with a smile. “He’s been doing it a long time, he’s a Hall of Fame coach and he’s great for the Big East. I think St. John’s being relevant has done wonders for our conference. I have tremendous respect for him, I just don’t like losing to him”
Entering St. John’s matchup with Marquette next week, the Red Storm are 4-1 in conference play and tied for second place with Villanova and Seton Hall. Creighton trails St. John’s by 1/2 game, sitting at 4-2 in conference play.
