Germany Transfers 32 Afghan Refugees from Pakistan to Berlin
Thirty-two Afghan refugees with prior admission approvals have arrived in Berlin from Pakistan, ending months of uncertainty under Germany’s special relocation program.
German media have reported on Saturday that 32 Afghan refugees who had previously received admission promises were transferred from Pakistan to the city of Berlin. The relocation took place as part of earlier German government commitments to resettle Afghans considered to be at risk.
Deutsche Welle reported on Saturday, 10 January, that the refugees arrived in Germany after months of waiting in Pakistan. They are expected to be transferred from Berlin to various federal states across the country after completing initial procedures.
Following the regime change in Afghanistan in 2021, thousands of Afghans who had worked with international organizations and Western governments faced serious security threats. Germany launched special admission programs to protect former local staff and other vulnerable individuals.
Due to the lack of direct evacuation routes, many Afghan refugees were forced to remain in third countries such as Pakistan for extended periods. Prolonged uncertainty, legal obstacles, and financial hardship have made their situation increasingly difficult.
A spokesperson for Germany’s Interior Ministry stated that the transfer of Afghans with admission approvals has continued in recent weeks through several flights. The program includes former employees of German institutions, their family members, and individuals at risk of Taliban retaliation.
Despite the suspension of the Afghan admission program in May 2025, the issuance of visas and relocation of some individuals has continued due to domestic legal decisions and obligations within Germany.
The arrival of these 32 refugees highlights how legal and humanitarian commitments can still provide protection, even amid political restrictions on migration.
Nevertheless, the future of thousands of other Afghans awaiting resettlement remains uncertain, and the situation continues to pose a significant humanitarian and migration challenge internationally.
