After Semenyo: Man Utd called to sign 28yo Argentine star from PL club
Manchester United contacted the representatives of Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi in December, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport.
The Argentine has been one of the Cherries’ most reliable defenders. He has his sights set on a bigger challenge with his contract expiring next summer.
Tuttosport now reveal that the Red Devils made a call to the player’s entourage last month, but their pursuit has stalled with Ruben Amorim’s exit from the managerial role.
United are presently focused on landing a successor. The lack of progress with Senesi’s agents has put Juventus in pole position to secure his free transfer.
Barcelona have also made contact with the player’s agent ROOF, but Juventus are not overly worried and are working on terms to secure a Bosman deal next summer.
Bianconeri manager Luciano Spalletti was keen on landing Senesi for Napoli in 2021, and it appears he could be the driving force behind the 28-year-old’s pursuit.
Spalletti’s contract expires in the summer, but Juventus are determined to negotiate a renewal.
Man Utd unlikely to pursue deal for Senesi
Most of the focus last month was on the Red Devils’ interest in Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.
After a failed summer pursuit, it was reported that United could swoop for his services in January, but the Ghanaian chose to join arch-rivals Manchester City instead.
The Senesi story has definitely come out of the blue, but the club could have made a winter approach for him if Amorim had not been dismissed from the head coach position.
With Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, Senesi would have been a good competitor on the left side of the back three. The left-footed ace may not have strong distribution skills, but he is superb defensively.
The Argentine has won 2.4 aerial duels per league appearance this campaign. He has registered two tackles, 4.4 recoveries and almost eight clearances on average for the Cherries.
Amorim’s departure has probably ended the club’s pursuit of Senesi. It is likely that the next permanent head coach could work with a four-man backline and move away from Amorim’s set-up.
With uncertainty over the formation, United may wait for Amorim’s successor before planning further signings. Juventus are therefore favourites to negotiate a pre-contract with Senesi.
