Fletcher drops major formation hint for Man United vs Brighton tomorrow
Manchester United are set to kick off their FA Cup campaign by hosting Brighton & Hove Albion tomorrow.
Interim head coach Darren Fletcher will take charge of the Red Devils for just the second time following the abrupt dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim was wedded to a back-three system, but Fletcher wasted no time stamping his own authority by switching to a 4-2-3-1 against Burnley.
All signs suggest the former United midfielder is prepared to double down on that decision when Brighton arrive.
Speaking recently to Owen Hargreaves, Fletcher offered a revealing insight into the tactical direction he feels most comfortable with.
He said (via Football on TNT Sports): “Really straightforward (on going to the back four system against Burnley) because that’s what I know, what I played in this club.
“It was the best plan for the game and was the formation I enjoy. That was a simple decision for me.”
“I am comfortable with it and something I am coaching for the last six months, day in and day out.”
We believe Fletcher is going to stick with his 4-2-3-1 formation.
While a back three has its merits, this current United squad appears ill-suited to executing that philosophy effectively.
With Amad Diallo unavailable, the lack of natural, attack-minded wing-backs only weakens the case for that setup.
Tactical debates have dominated discussions at Old Trafford for more than a year, but the emphasis must now shift decisively towards execution.
Irrespective of the system, players need to execute the basics correctly.
The FA Cup carries enormous weight for the club this season, perhaps more than at any point in recent memory.
Against Brighton, anything less than victory would be unacceptable.
