“L.A. was wild at the time,” Tom said. “There were no cars on the street, you couldn’t go anywhere. People weren’t leaving their homes. Our first son was starting to crawl and we only had this tiny deck for him to play on. There was this thought of, we don’t know if we can be here anymore.”
During their trip, they saw a ranch with two homes on it and fell in love.
“I thought, ‘This is what I want in five years… so why not just do it now?’” he recalled.
Tom went on to joke about being being famous will living in a small rural town.
“No one bothers you in a small town. Everyone’s famous in a small town,” he said with a laugh.
Despite no longer living L.A., Tom hasn’t left the entertainment industry. He currently hosts the Smallville rewatch podcast TalkVille with former co-star Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luther. He will also be starring in the new comedy Chasing Summer, which comedian Iliza Shlesinger wrote.
“It was so fun to shoot. Everybody wanted to be there,” Tom said of the movie. “All the decisions were made right there on set, it was collaborative, and it just reminded me why I love this job.”
While he’s not filming he’s busy raising his family – he and Jessica welcomed their second son in June 2021 – and working on his wife’s business breeding sport horses.
“We have American sport horses, jumpers, and we breed,” Tom explained. “I’m more than happy to help, but she’s the captain of that ship,”
As for his life on the ranch, Tom said, “It’s peaceful. And it feels real.”
