Arsenal 0–0 Man United: Lundkvist and Schuller make debuts as resilient Red Devils frustrate Gunners
Man United Women held Arsenal to a goalless draw in the Women’s Super League at the Emirates stadium on Saturday afternoon.
New signings Lea Schuller and Hanna Lundkvist made their debut, coming as second half substitutes.
Arsenal dominated proceedings early on but United created the game’s first chance, with Anneke Borbe producing a brilliant save inside five minutes, tipping Fridolina Rolfo’s header over the bar.
The Gunners stepped up a gear and called Phallon Tullis-Joyce into action in the 22nd minute, as the American goalkeeper denied Olivia Smith from close range.
Following a corner, Mariona Caldentey then slipped in Katie McCabe, whose cutback found Kim Little, who could not hit the target.
Arsenal pushed to break the deadlock before the break, but were unable to fashion any clear cut chance to test Tullis-Joyce.
United began the second half with better attacking intent, pressing high and looking to attack with pace.
However, it was the hosts that carved out the first opening, as Caldentey teed up Frida Maanum, whose effort was blocked.
Jayde Riviere was sent off after receiving a yellow card for a second bookable offence, allowing Arsenal to regain control.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League holders cranked up the pressure to get a breakthrough, but United held on to secure a point.
The result leaves United fourth in the standings, one point behind Arsenal, but could drop to fifth if Tottenham Hotspur beat Leicester City.
Marc Skinner’s side return to action next Sunday when they face Burnley in the Women’s FA Cup.
