Tottenham had bid rejected for Italian centre-back, now he is expected to hit the limelight
A young defender Tottenham Hotspur tried and failed to sign in the summer transfer window, is thought to have turned a corner.
Over the last few weeks, we have seen suggestions that Spurs could reignite their interest in many of the players they failed to get through the door in the summer.
Spurs have been backed to make another move for Savinho, and it has now emerged over recent days that the Lilywhites could try again for Conor Gallagher, who is now on the market.
Tottenham also saw an offer for Pisa defender Francesco Coppolam rejected in the summer. At that point, the 20-year-old centre-back was just returning from a successful loan stint at Vis Pesaro in Serie C.
Big hopes at Pisa for Tottenham target Francesco Coppola
Having turned down Tottenham’s approach, Pisa’s plan was for Francesco Coppola to be a regular starter this season, but the youngster picked up an injury, which set back his development.
The defender has now finally recovered from his ankle problem and made his first appearance of the season against Como on Tuesday.
Although Cesc Fabregas’ men emerged 3-0 winners, Gianluca di Marzio (as translated by Sport Witness) claims that Coppola had plenty of promising moments.
Di Marzio states that the reason Pisa turned down Spurs’ approach in the summer is that they ‘blindly’ trust the youngster to grow and evolve into a top player this season.
The belief at the club is that the 20-year-old’s ‘time has now come’, with Alberto Gilardino expected to keep him in his starting line-up over the coming months.
Why Spurs’ interest in Coppola may have cooled
One would expect the North London club to keep a close eye on how Coppaolo gets on for the rest of the season before deciding whether to try again for the youngster next summer.
However, Fabio Paratici was likely the person who recommended the young centre-back to Tottenham.
Now that Paratici is set to depart Spurs and join Fiorentina as their head of football, one doubts if the Premier League side would be as enthusiastic about Coppola as they were last summer.
