Tottenham receive good news and bad news at AFCON after red card elimination

While Tottenham struggle on at home, Yves Bissouma has been trying to lead Mali to AFCON success. Sadly, he has failed.

Thankfully, Tottenham didn’t have to lose too many players over the past month. In fact, just two Spurs stars jetted off for AFCON: Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr.

It’s no secret that one of those absences will have hit Thomas Frank harder. Indeed, Bissouma has not even played this season.

He’s not even likely to stay at Tottenham for much longer, with an exit potentially on the cards this month. Either way, the Lilywhites will be welcoming the Mali international back in the coming days.

Mali knocked out of AFCON by Senegal

That’s because, on Friday night, Mali were defeated in the AFCON quarter-finals, with Senegal progressing in a 1-0 win.

Yves Bissouma started the game, but he didn’t finish it. The Mali midfielder was sent off in stoppage time in the first-half.

He was shown a second yellow card, both of them being for rather petty, needless challenges. The damage had already been done by that point, though, with Everton star Iliman Ndiaye giving Senegal the lead after 27 minutes.

Tottenham knew they would get one player back this week, but unfortunately it won’t be Pape Sarr. The young midfielder didn’t feature in the game, but he will remain with the Senegal squad for a while longer as they look to progress to the final next week.

Yves Bissouma might not be at Spurs for long

The return of Bissouma will do very little to help Frank and co. Indeed, the midfielder is very unlikely to ever play for Tottenham again, with a sale being lined up this month.

Bissouma is wanted by a handful of clubs from Saudi Arabia, the USA, and Turkey. Spurs are very keen to offload him, too.

Interest from the Premier League in Bissouma cooled in recent weeks, with West Ham and Everton deciding against making a move for the Mali man.

With disciplinary issues and injuries pushing him further down the Spurs pecking order, the club will surely be hoping someone comes in for him soon.
