Former K-Pop Idol Nana Sued by Man Who Allegedly Broke Into Her Home
Former K-pop idol Nana is being countersued for “attempted murder and aggravated assault” by the man arrested for breaking into the home of the singer-actress.
News broke in November last year that a man in his 30s had broken into the home of the former idol, who shares the residence with her mother, in Guri, a city east of Seoul. According to reports, the suspect, armed with a weapon, entered the residence with a ladder through an unlocked balcony. Both Nana and her mother were home at the time of the break-in.
Why Is He Counter-Suing?
Upon entry, the suspect was reported to have encountered Nana's mother first and demanded money and valuables. The encounter grew physical where Nana's mother was then reportedly "strangled."
Nana, who had been asleep at the time, awoke to her mother's screams. Together, they were able to restrain the assailant before calling the police. It was reported that the singer had also sustained "physical injuries" from the incident.
Authorities have shared that the suspect also sustained injuries, including “a laceration to the jaw.”
Investigators did not bring any charges against Nana or her mother and ruled the suspect’s injury as a result of self-defense.
What the Countersuit Claims
In a series of letters shared through an acquaintance and released by JTBC, the suspect wrote: "When I entered Nana's house, I was only wearing gloves and a headset." He said, "It was only for theft, and I did not prepare a weapon in advance."
"From the very first moment we met, I did not touch any part of Nana's body, not even a single hair. On the contrary, even after I was stabbed with a weapon, I was assaulted by Nana," he wrote.
He went on to explain his motive behind the attempted burglary, which was to pay for his mother’s hospital bills. He went on to allege that he was bribed into admitting he entered the home with a weapon, and in exchange, Nana’s party would then give him the “40 million won” that he needed. (Approximately, $27,500.)
What Nana’s Side Is Saying
Nana’s agency, Sublime, released a statement regarding the charges:
“Nana and her family suffered serious physical and psychological harm during the attack by an assailant armed with a weapon.”
"Without remorse, the assailant has filed a countersuit against the victim and is exploiting the fact that she is a public figure to cause secondary harm."
The agency added that it plans to take “all available civil and criminal legal action against the suspect.”
In an Instagram post, Nana shared her thoughts, first thanking fans for their support, and saying she had “learned a lot” from the incident. She added of the experience, “My desire to see the world and people too positively and to trust them somehow may have been too much of my own greed."
