Inside Melania Trump’s Marriage: ‘Little Interaction,’ Separate Lives, & One Shared Obsession
Melania Trump has always done things her way, and that might include her marriage to Donald Trump.
The First Lady of the United States makes it no secret that she prefers life in New York City or at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, to the White House, and a People source confirmed that’s how she and her husband conduct their marriage — separately.
“There is little interaction between them, just what is expected,” an insider claimed to the media outlet. ”Then they go back to doing their own thing.” Melania will show up for any necessary press appearances, but otherwise she’s free to pursue her own interests.
Still, White House spokesman Davis Ingle rebuffed that portrayal of their marriage, telling People, “President Trump and the entire administration work 24/7 for the American people to deliver on the promise to Make America Great Again. The Trump Family is the most successful family of all time.”
Even though the White House is disputing the media outlet’s report, these stories go back to Donald Trump’s first administration. The Washington Post wrote in May 2018 that Melania and Donald Trump spent “very little to no time together” after she moved into the White House in June 2017.
Author Michael Wolff doubled down on that sentiment to the Daily Mail in July 2021, “She is not with him a lot of the time. This was true when he was in the White House, and it’s true now.” He questions if it was a marriage of convenience, but shared that the sensitive topic “remains the third rail that nobody wants to touch.”
However, there is one fun pastime that they reportedly enjoy together: interior decorating.
“Donald has his own vision for his homes and clubs, and over the years has designed and selected a lot of the furnishings and finishings himself at Mar-a-Lago and the golf clubs,” the People insider added. “He and Melania have that in common. They both love interior design.”
Even with their shared interest, The Wall Street Journal reported in October 2025 that Melania “privately raised concerns about tearing down the East Wing and told associates it wasn’t her project.” She doesn’t want to be associated with her husband’s ballroom project, which has reportedly ballooned to $400 million, per USA Today. That interior design space will be left entirely to Donald Trump.
