Loan move: Championship club enter talks with Man Utd to sign 22yo midfielder
Manchester United could once again turn to the loan market this winter as they look to accelerate the development of several young prospects.
Sekou Kone has already taken a major step towards a temporary exit, training with INEOS-owned Lausanne-Sport as talks over a potential loan continue.
Toby Collyer is another emerging midfielder at Old Trafford who may soon find himself edging closer to the exit door.
According to Sky Sports journalist Danyal Khan, Hull City are in talks with United over a potential loan move for Collyer.
The 22-year-old was sent on a season-long loan to West Bromwich Albion in the summer.
He featured for 253 minutes across 12 games in the Championship.
A string of injuries repeatedly derailed his momentum, eventually forcing United to recall him from loan last month.
Collyer is currently nursing a calf injury but is expected to return to action before the end of the month.
If he can regain full fitness quickly, another loan move could provide the consistent minutes his development now demands.
We believe there is an opportunity to play Collyer at United, especially after the departure of Ruben Amorim.
United have abandoned Amorim’s back-three system and are now expected to operate in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation.
That tactical shift creates space for an additional central midfielder, potentially opening the door for Collyer as a squad option.
Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo are the only recognised options competing for the two central midfield roles.
Bruno Fernandes is also now expected to play in his favoured number 10 role.
