Nicole Kidman’s Divorce 'Spiral' Was Reportedly Fueled by Her Tom Cruise Trauma
Even though Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have settled their split rather amicably, her prior divorce from Tom Cruise may have haunted her during the proceedings.
A source for the Daily Mail indicated that the “sticking point” during the negotiations was always about “custody of Sunday and Faith.” Kidman was given primary custody of their 17-year-old and 15-year-old daughters for 306 days a year, while Urban was given 59 days. “Keith was initially asking for equal time with their daughters,” the insider added, noting that his request sent Kidman “into a spiral.”
The outlet reported that the reason was tied back to her breakup with Cruise in 2001. “Nicole also wanted the kids more because she wasn’t given that benefit when she divorced Tom Cruise,” a second source revealed.
The divorce agreement gave the former A-list couple joint custody of Isabella, 32, and Connor, 30, but their ties to the Church of Scientology influenced their decision to stay with Cruise full-time. It’s led to an estrangement that Kidman tries hard to keep out of the headlines.
The Practical Magic star has lightly touched on the topic of her adult children, most notably in 2018 when she addressed their religious preferences.

“They are adults,” Kidman told Australia’s Who magazine. “They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists, and as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”
The 58-year-old actress appears to have a warmer relationship with Bella, and her eldest daughter has reportedly supported her through her divorce from Urban.
“Bella has been a huge cheerleader for her. She has had a front seat to this split, and she encouraged Nicole to take a hard stance and take the legal steps to separate. Nicole was keeping the marriage on life support, and it was sucking the soul out of her,” a Closer Online UK insider claimed.
It’s unclear if Kidman is still in contact with Connor right now, but it seems that the lessons learned from her custody battle with Cruise made her fight even harder for Sunday and Faith. It was a situation that Urban apparently recognized, too.
“Their daughters are both in their teens and need their mother more than their father at these ages,” the Daily Mail source concluded. “Keith knew he’d never win the battle in court and finally backed down. That’s when the divorce was settled.”
