Bill Hader & Ali Wong Said Their Breakup Was 'Amicable,' but Friends Hint at a Bigger Issue
Bill Hader and Ali Wong have called it quits after a two-year relationship, but there seems to be more to the story than just an “amicable” split.
People confirmed the news on January 7 with the message that their “busy schedules and family obligations” kept them apart. But a Daily Mail source is indicating that Hader’s “moody” personality might have done them in.
“Bill is not the easiest to be around; he is tense and harsh a lot of the time. Everyone knows this in Hollywood, that is why his nickname is Bill Hater, because he hates on certain things,” the insider claimed to the outlet.
They noted that “he can be kind at times, but then he can be prickly,” and it was hard for Wong to anticipate his frame of mind when they were together. Their inner circle reportedly felt that a breakup was “a long time coming” because their personalities were so different, even though they are both comedians.
Even with Hader’s “hilarious” and “clever” sense of humor, he was also “cranky” at times, while Wong was “a super sweet girl, very normal, very fun and easy going” to be around. Wong raved about Hader during a May 2024 appearance at the Netflix Is a Joke Fest in Los Angeles.
She shared that after her separation from husband Justin Hakuta, Hader wooed her at a dinner party. “‘Hey, I just happened to hear the news about your divorce, and I’ve had a crush on you forever. I actually told my best friend years ago that you were my dream girl, and I know it sounds crazy, but I want you to be my girlfriend,‘” she recalled of their first meeting, via Rolling Stone.
Wong and Hader began dating in the fall of 2022, split for a hot minute, and then took their relationship to the next level in April 2023. Wong finalized her divorce from Hakuta in May 2024, and they share two daughters, Mari, 10, and Nikki, 8.
Hader was married to Maggie Carey from 2006 to 2018. They share three daughters, Hannah, 16, Harper, 13, and Hayley, 10. After his divorce, he had romances with high-profile actresses, including Rachel Bilson and Anna Kendrick.
Bilson described their breakup that occurred at the height of the pandemic in the summer of 2020 as a major heartbreak for her. “I could not leave my house, you know what I mean? I had nothing else to do but sit in it, and deal with it and feel it,” Bilson said on her Broad Ideas podcast in June 2022. “It was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done, harder than childbirth.”
