Pope Leo Blasts Abortion, Says Killing Babies is “Deplorable”
Pope Leo XIV sharply condemned abortion and surrogacy in a major address today, declaring the allocation of public funds to support it “deplorable” and a grave violation of human dignity that prioritizes suppressing life over aiding mothers and families.
In his remarks, the pontiff emphasized life as “a priceless gift” that must be protected from conception, framing the family as its “responsible guardian.”
“Life, in fact, is a priceless gift that develops within a committed relationship based on mutual self-giving and service,” Pope Leo said. “In light of this profound vision of life as a gift to be cherished and of the family as its responsible guardian, we categorically reject any practice that denies or exploits the origin of life and its development.”
The pope expressed particular alarm over initiatives funding cross-border travel to obtain abortions.

“In this regard, the Holy See expresses deep concern about projects aimed at financing cross-border mobility for the purpose of accessing the so-called ‘right’ to safe abortion,” the pope said.
Pope Leo went further, criticizing the use of taxpayer money to fund abortions that kills babies instead of aiding pregnant women and families.
“It also considers it deplorable that public resources are allocated to suppress life rather than being invested to support mothers and families, and that they must remain the protection of every unborn child and the effective and concrete support of every woman so she is able to welcome life,” he said.
The address also targeted surrogacy, which the pope described as a violation of human dignity.
“Likewise, there’s the practice of surrogacy,” he said. “By transforming gestation into a negotiable service, this violates the dignity both of the child who was reduced to product and of mother exploiting her body and reproductive process, distorting the original relational calling of the family.”
The strong statements reaffirm the Catholic Church’s longstanding teaching on the sanctity of life from conception to natural death, building on earlier messages from Pope Leo, who has repeatedly urged the faithful to “choose life” and reject the “voices of death.”
His words are a clear and uncompromising defense of the unborn, calling for greater support for mothers in crisis pregnancies rather than policies that facilitate abortion. The Vatican released the full text of the address through its official channels, highlighting the pontiff’s focus on family challenges in the modern world, including threats to human life.
