OpenAI Acquires AI Coaching Team Convogo
OpenAI is acquiring the team behind Convogo, an executive coaching AI tool, in a move that signals a shift toward personalized AI leadership development.
This latest acquisition comes as the company, founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others, continues its expansion beyond chatbots into specialized business applications.
OpenAI has built its reputation on generative AI technologies like the GPT series and ChatGPT, but now they’re making another bet that AI-powered executive coaching represents the next frontier in workplace transformation.
The three amigos
Convogo says it automates the “time-consuming work of analyzing interviews, surveys, and other feedback data.”
The idea is to free up time for coaches, consultants, and talent leaders.
The three co-founders, Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike Gillett will join OpenAI.
In a LinkedIn post, Cooper explains, “Convogo started as a weekend hackathon sparked by a question from my mom, an executive coach — could we build an AI tool to automate the drudgery of report writing so she could spend more time on the high-value, human coaching work that she loves?
“At the same time, we’ve always felt that the real problem we’re working on is bigger: AI keeps getting more and more intelligent, but without the right tooling, it’s hard to translate that intelligence into real outcomes. With every new model release, the gap between what’s possible and what’s realized gets wider.
“We’re convinced now more than ever that the key to bridging that gap lies in thoughtful, purpose-built experiences, like what we’ve built for coaches at Convogo. That’s why we’re thrilled to join OpenAI to continue our work of making AI accessible and useful to professionals in every industry.”
Based on Convogo’s website, it has a lot of well-known names as clients: Amazon, Waymo, Disney, Adobe, HP, X, Expedia, and more.
Not in isolation
The Convogo team acquisition isn’t happening in isolation – it’s part of OpenAI’s broader assault on enterprise markets. Just over a month ago, the organization announced an alliance with consulting firm Accenture that will deploy ChatGPT Enterprise to tens of thousands of employees.
This alliance reveals OpenAI’s master plan: revolutionize how businesses operate from the ground up. Accenture staff will integrate ChatGPT Enterprise across consulting, operations, and delivery work, while the collaboration helps OpenAI scale its enterprise capabilities. The consulting industry itself is being fundamentally reshaped, with AI rapidly changing the type of work that consulting firms perform for clients.
But there is a human cost that organizations rarely discuss publicly. Four months ago in September, Accenture’s leadership admitted they’ve been “exiting” employees who cannot be reskilled for the AI era. This admission reveals the brutal reality behind AI transformation that most corporations try to keep under wraps.
What this means for the future of work
The Convogo acquisition signals OpenAI’s recognition that AI isn’t just about automating tasks – it’s about fundamentally reshaping leadership and human development. By combining executive coaching capabilities with their existing enterprise tools, OpenAI is positioning itself as the comprehensive AI solution for modern businesses.
This move comes as traditional consulting firms scramble to completely reimagine their service offerings in an AI-dominated landscape. Organizations face a stark choice: embrace AI-powered workflows now, or risk being left behind in an increasingly automated business world.
Well, well, healthcare has experienced an AI shift that might make doctors worried about job security go very pale.
