Investors piled into this miner after talk of US investment in Greenland

Shares in Greenland-focused miner Amaroq Minerals surged after its chief executive told CNBC the company has held talks with US government bodies about potential investment opportunities.

Canada-based Amaroq's stock price on the TSX Venture Exchange closed 19.2% higher at 2.30 Canadian dollars, or $1.66, apiece on Thursday.

Deals could involve "offtake agreements, infrastructure support and credit lines," Amaroq CEO Eldur Ólafsson told CNBC on Thursday.

Ólafsson told the network that American investor interest in the company has increased alongside renewed political attention on Greenland.

That attention has been sharpened by President Donald Trump's renewed focus on the Arctic island, which he raised during his first term in office.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, has grown in strategic importance as melting Arctic ice opens new shipping routes and intensifies competition among the US, Russia, and China.

Trump has argued that Denmark is not doing enough to safeguard Greenland's strategic value.

"We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security," he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

Speaking in a separate Bloomberg TV interview, Ólafsson said renewed US political focus on Greenland has already translated into increased interest from American investors.

Amaroq employs around 300 people and has raised more than $300 million over the past decade, Ólafsson said.

The company operates the Nalunaq gold mine in southern Greenland and holds exploration licences focused on copper and rare earths. The company is advancing projects involving germanium and gallium, metals used in semiconductors, defense systems, and advanced electronics.

Ólafsson told Bloomberg he understands Trump's interest in Greenland, but added that people on the ground "don't like the rhetoric or the language."

At the same time, he said the heightened attention has opened opportunities for investment in a region where infrastructure and logistics remain major challenges.

"It's really important that the Nordics and the US work together with Greenland. In the end, Greenland makes the decision. We are a Greenland-focused company and work in its interests, but these interests need to align for things to work," he told Bloomberg.
