Sports briefs: Tam secures non-league win against Redwood
Luke Nurney set up two goals for the Tam High boys soccer team in a 3-1 non-league victory against Redwood (2-2-2) on Thursday.
Cole Soto scored the opener for the Red-tailed Hawks (5-2-2) on an assist by Mateo Hale. Nurney assisted Marco Caruso on the second goal then Devin Perkins on the third.
The victory marked the third this preseason for Tam over a perennial MCAL playoff contender. The Red-tailed Hawks posted wins over Archie Williams and Terra Linda last month. Tam has a bye when league play begins on Saturday then faces TL on Tuesday.
- Logan Dean and Frisly Reyes scored as San Rafael settled for a 2-2 tie against Montgomery on Wednesday night. Angel Ochoa and Dylan Maldonado had assists foe the Bulldogs (4-2-5), who led 2-0 before Montgomery made a late rally.
- Sean Chamberlin scored his third goal in two games this week as Archie Williams battled Windsor to a 1-1 draw on Thursday. Silas Eyler provided the assist for the Peregrine Falcons (5-3-1).
- San Marin (0-6-3) fell 3-0 against Vallejo on Wednesday night.
Girls soccer
Iris Hawks scored twice and Kaia Amir had a goal and an assist for Redwood in a 4-0 non-league win against Archie Williams (4-4-0) on Thursday.
Amir opened the scoring in the 11th minute on an assist from Addison Ryba. Zoe Clark doubled the lead just before halftime, assisted by Amir. Hawks added a pair of goals in the last 10 minutes for the final margin. Lauren Ellington had the assist on the third goal for Redwood (3-3-2)
- Freshman Seda Sankey scored the lone goal for TL in a 2-1 loss to Alameda on Wednesday night. Allie Marovich had the assist for TL (5-4-2).
Prep wrestling
Redwood’s 146-pounder Charlie Seraphine went 2-0 with a pair of pins as the Giants earned victories over San Rafael and Terra Linda to open the MCAL slate on Wednesday. The Giants’ Dylan Morton (140), who is “on the radar” in the state rankings also went 2-0 with a pin and a technical fall.
The Giants beat an undermanned San Rafael squad 44-23, and beat Terra Linda, 44-35, despite forfeiting five matches. Terra Linda beat San Rafael, 53-12. San Rafael’s Rio Johnson (152) won by technical fall and Nikolai Bruce (167) earned a quick pinfall win in their match against Redwood. Terra Linda’s Arthur Sepan (152) earned a technical fall win against Redwood.
- San Marin posted wins over Novato and Archie Williams in Wednesday’s MCAL tri-meet. Dom Greco (115), Luke Miller (140), Luis Zaragoza (146), Quinn Peterson (159) and Landon Pearce (177) each went 2-0 in contested matches for the Mustangs. San Marin beat Novato, 63-16, and beat Archie Williams, 75-6. Novato beat Archie Williams, 55-18. Heavyweight Braeden Carrol of Novato began his MCAL title defense Wednesday with a pinfall win over San Marin’s David Coronado. The Hornets’ Jiriah Vannasy (128) went 2-0 on the mat against the Peregrine Falcons and Mustangs. Archie Williams got wins from Lucas Martyn (159) and Rainer Grabenkort (128).
Boys basketball
San Domenico held on in a nailbiter for a 54-51 victory over rival Marin Academy in Thursday’s Bay Counties League opener.
Oskar Valiauga dominated the paint as he scored a team-high 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds for the Panthers (1-0 BCL, 13-3), who also got 15 points from Ika Jokhadze.
Kai Ho scored a game-high 19 points for the Wildcats (0-1, 12-4), who missed a late 3-point attempt that would have forced overtime. Tristan Standfield powered a second-half Marin Academy rally and finished with 14 points.
- Novato resident Dylan Chelew posted 27 points for St. Vincent as the Mustangs beat Elsie Allen, 71-36, on Wednesday. Novato’s Barrett Chaput added 11 points for the Mustangs.
Girls basketball
Novato lost 47-22 to Sonoma Valley (11-4) on Wednesday in the Hornets’ final non-league tune-up before league play. Novato (4-10) is scheduled to host Branson on Friday.
- Terra Linda fell 42-23 to Alhambra in Wednesday’s non-league action. The Trojans are scheduled to open MCAL play on Friday against San Marin.
Women’s basketball
Mahliya Wilson and Keyonee Neal both scored 14 points as Dominican fell at home 69-62 against Hawaii Hilo on Thursday night.
The Penguins (10-3, 4-3 PacWest) saw their four-game winning streak snapped despite holding the Vulcans to six points in the second quarter. Hawaii Hilo scored at least 20 in the other three quarters and outscored Dominican 22-15 in the third quarter to take a 49-43 lead.
Dominican trailed 60-50 with just over 5 minutes to play before Janiya Sawyer scored three consecutive baskets to pull the Penguins within 60-56 with 3 minutes left. Dominican got within 66-62 inside the final minute on another basket by Sawyer (12 points) but would get no closer.
Basketball
The Marin County Free Throw Championship returns on Jan. 25 — at Archie Williams High from 8:30-11:30 a.m. — with proceeds from the event going to help the needy in the community through the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
