100% passing: Darren Fletcher could unleash 18yo wonderkid on the right wing vs Brighton
Manchester United interim manager Darren Fletcher could unleash Shea Lacey on the right wing during Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils dismissed Ruben Amorim from the head coach position earlier this week, and Fletcher was placed on temporary charge for the 2-2 Premier League draw against Burnley on the road.
United were the dominant side on the night, with 30 shots and 10 on target. Benjamin Sesko had a memorable game as he scored a brace, thereby ending a nine-game goalless streak.
Patrick Dorgu was likewise impressive from an unfamiliar left-wing role. Meanwhile, teenager Lacey had a fine cameo, hitting the woodwork from 20 yards out. It could have been a memorable winner.
Lacey barely got a chance to impress under Amorim with just one appearance at Aston Villa, but Fletcher showed his trust in the teenager right away, and it almost paid dividends with a winning goal.
The 18-year-old came close with another shot in stoppage time. It was a solid cameo with a 100 percent passing accuracy, and we believe Fletcher could be tempted to play him from off on Sunday.
Brighton left-back Maxim De Cuyper has looked vulnerable against quick-dribbling wingers in one-on-one situations, and United have the opportunity to capitalise on his weakness this weekend.
Luke Shaw had a poor outing against Burnley and was partly at fault for the equaliser. We would ideally play Dorgu at left-back ahead of him, with Matheus Cunha returning to the left wing position.
Cunha was far from his best on the right wing yesterday. This could pave the way for Lacey to start on the right flank if Bryan Mbeumo is unavailable to make the game due to international duty.
Cameroon take on Morocco in the quarter-final of the Africa Cup of Nations on Friday night. Cameroon’s elimination could see Mbeumo make the matchday squad for the 4.30 pm kick-off on Sunday.
If Cameroon were to progress, Noussair Mazraoui could return to Old Trafford early.
Amad Diallo may not be involved, given that the Ivory Coast take on Egypt on Saturday night. There is a turnover time of just 19 hours. It is unlikely that Amad will be involved versus Brighton in case of elimination.
