Mzuzu University Dismisses Social Media Rumours Over Graduation
Mzuzu University has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that 500 students will fail to graduate during its 28th congregation ceremony on Friday due to missing grades.
In a statement issued on Thursday Mzuni said the issue is not about missing grades but incomplete academic records affecting 262 students.
The university explained that the affected students each have one or more outstanding academic assessments, which makes them ineligible for graduation until the required courses are successfully re-taken and passed in line with prevailing academic regulations.
Mzuzu University said incomplete academic records arise from formally recorded academic outcomes and not from system failures, administrative errors or missing marks as alleged on social media.
A breakdown provided in the statement shows that 57 diploma students have outstanding courses, while 133 bachelor’s degree students have one outstanding course.
Of these, 70 are repeat cases yet to be redone and 63 have supplementary examinations yet to be taken.
The statement further indicates that 61 bachelor’s degree students have two outstanding courses, while 68 students have three or more outstanding courses and were required to withdraw and return in appropriate semesters to repeat failed courses, making them ineligible for graduation.
The university added that some assessment cases have recently undergone Faculty and Senate review, and students who have met the requirements have since been certified for their respective awards.
Mzuzu University reaffirmed its commitment to academic integrity, citing strong quality assurance systems and a home-grown automated grade management system to ensure proper academic progression.
The institution is set to hold its 28th congregation ceremony on Friday.
