Prep roundup: Max Robenalt’s clutch play lifts Burlingame over Carlmont
As the game clock ticked down below 10 seconds Wednesday night, it appeared Carlmont was ready to pull off a mild upset against visiting Burlingame in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opener for both schools.
Then junior Max Robenalt pulled off the play of the night.
With the teams tied at 45-45, the 6-foot-1 shooting forward stole the ball and raced from one end of the court to the other, where he was fouled with one second remaining. Robenalt sank one of two free throws, and the Panthers edged the Scots 46-45 to improve to 9-3 on the season. Carlmont fell to 5-6.
The game was close throughout, as neither team led by more than five points at the end of each of the first three quarters. Jean-Luc Uharriet had 15 points for the winning team and Lucca Maher contributed 10. Carlmont’s Jordan Rice, a 6-5 junior, topped all scorers with 17 points.
Aragon 69, Capuchino 47
It took a while to get going, but once the Dons figured it out, there was no stopping them. The home team outscored Capuchino 40-25 in the second half to win their PAL Ocean Division opener and push their record to 9-3 overall. The Dons, who had 16 fouls in the first half and only seven after intermission, were led by Armando Cajbon with 27 points, including 17 in the final two periods. Kaleb Bradeth had 12 points. Capuchino dropped to 5-8 overall.
No. 1 Salesian 69, Albany 50
Even without Stanford-bound senior guard Elias Obenyah, who sat out Wednesday’s game with a hip flexor injury, Salesian rolled to victory in its Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division opener. Carlton Perilliat Jr. led Salesian with 10 points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Nathan Canilao has the complete recap here.
Girls basketball
No. 8 Bishop O’Dowd 75, Castro Valley 13
The host Dragons (7-6) led 53-3 at halftime in the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill opener for both schools. Freshman Naya Chapman, the younger sister of 247Sports four-star point guard Myella Chapman, led O’Dowd with 16 points. Jayla Stokes had 14 and Tenaya Aguilera, also a freshman, scored 13 points. It was a slow night for Myella Chapman, 247Sports’ No. 2-rated junior in California. The Ohio State commit scored seven points. Castro Valley fell to 4-8 overall.
No. 17 Menlo-Atherton 49, San Mateo 29
The Bears rolled to a 28-4 halftime lead in an impressive Peninsula Athletic League-Bay opener. The home team improved to 9-2 on the season with cousins Luisa and Mary Tava combining for 25 points. Luisa Tava sank a trio of 3-pointers for M-A on her way to 15 points. Mary Tava, a sophomore, had 10. San Mateo entered the game with a 10-2 record but managed only 13 points through the first three quarters. Bella Fong led the Bearcats with 12 points.
No. 19 Half Moon Bay 53, Mills 31
Zoey Lemoge was the game’s star with 20 points and 15 rebounds as the Cougars improved to 9-3 while romping in their PAL Bay opener. Makena Glynn scored 11 points and Xochitl Nieves added 10. Nieves scored all 10 of her points in the first half. Mills (4-5, 0-1) received eight points apiece from Kelly Ho and Amaya Moore.
No. 20 Dougherty Valley 62, Berkeley 22
The Wildcats went on the road and had an easy time, outscoring Berkeley in all four quarters. Senior Keira Tom scored 22 points to lead Dougherty Valley, which improved to 10-2 with the non-league victory. Tom leads the Wildcats in scoring (22.2 ppg), rebounding (7.1 per game) and steals (3.3 per contest). Vanessa Nguyen had 11 points and six steals for Dougherty and Chloe Omega contributed 10 points. Berkeley slipped to 2-8.
Hillsdale 50, Carlmont 29
The Fighting Knights won their PAL Bay opener to improve to 9-2 overall. It was the second win in a row for Hillsdale, which opened the season with six straight victories before losing two of three. Carlmont (9-4, 0-1) was led in scoring by seniors Tia Helmy with 12 points and Emerson Barajas with nine.
Terra Nova 61, Sequoia 29
The Tigers had a trio of players score in double figures while winning their PAL Ocean opener and improving to 5-3 overall. Danielle Dibble led the way with 15 points, 12 of those coming on four 3-pointers. Reese Kelley added 14 points and Haley Kubit had 13. Terra Nova led 37-14 at the half. Olivia Macuga dropped in 12 points for visiting Sequoia (6-4), which was also playing its league opener.
Gunn 40, Mountain View 31
After a close first half, Gunn went on a 15-4 run in the third quarter to take a 33-19 lead into the fourth quarter. But visiting Mountain View crept within four points in the final period before the Titans managed to put the game away. Freshman Stella Kitch scored 21 for Gunn, which improved to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the SCVAL De Anza Division. Emilia Confors-Gurovski dropped in 10 points for the Spartans (7-6. 0-2).
Homestead 46, MacDonald 29
The visiting Mustangs won for the eighth time in 11 tries and squared their SCVAL El Camino record at 1-1 behind seniors Leona Kovaci and Vedhikaa Medampalli. Each scored nine points. Nya Liah of MacDonald (5-5) led all scorers 13 points.
Menlo School 54, Shasta Summit 17
The Knights outscored the visitors 49-9 after the first quarter and rolled to their eighth win in 10 games in this non-league contest. Anikah Shah had 14 points for Menlo and Ava Allen added 13. Shasta Summit fell to 6-5.
Monte Vista 52, Pittsburg 47
The Mustangs (8-5) led by 15 points entering the fourth quarter, but the visiting Pirates (8-3) trimmed the margin to two points in this non-league matchup. Juliette Leonard, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds, hit clutch free throws late for Monte Vista. Kennedy Whyte also had a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards. Naliyah Sefidi had 12 points for the Mustangs. Pittsburg was led by Yariah Asidanya with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jurnee Cox also poured in 14 points for the visitors.
St. Mary’s 63, St. Patrick-St. Vincent 47
Senior forward Gabriela Clement posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Panthers (9-3) past SPSV (5-6). Both teams were playing their Tri County Athletic League Rock Division openers. St. Mary’s put four players in double figures. Elia Anne Kudemus had 14 points, Alana Rice had 11 and Charli Davis chipped in 10. Beatrice Branagh led the winners with 12 rebounds. St. Mary’s led 32-25 at the half.
