Iran Opens New Milak Border Route to Boost Trade With Afghanistan
Iran said it has opened a new land route at the Milak border with Afghanistan, doubling cargo traffic and expanding cross-border trade capacity.
Iran’s embassy in Kabul announced on Wednesday that a new land route has been opened at the Milak border crossing with Afghanistan, doubling the capacity for cargo trucks transporting goods between the two countries.
In a post on X, the embassy said the new route will significantly increase the flow of Iranian fuel and commercial exports into Afghanistan through the Milak–Zaranj crossing linking Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province with Afghanistan’s Nimroz province.
The development follows earlier visits to the border by Taliban Industry and Commerce Minister Nooruddin Azizi alongside Iranian officials, during which the two sides agreed to construct a second land corridor to expand trade.
Iranian officials said the project is expected to boost bilateral commerce, with local authorities estimating the crossing could handle up to 1,000 vehicles per day once fully operational.
The Milak crossing is one of Afghanistan’s most important trade gateways, particularly for fuel, food, and construction materials, playing a vital role in sustaining Afghanistan’s import-dependent economy.
Officials say the new route supports broader economic agreements between Iran and the Taliban administration, valued at an estimated $10 billion, and is expected to further deepen cross-border commercial ties.
Since 2021, Iran has expanded economic engagement with Afghanistan, seeking to strengthen border trade and infrastructure cooperation despite international sanctions on both sides.
