'We saw the truth': Trump accused of pushing 'lie' about deadly ICE shooting
President Donald Trump was slammed on Wednesday after claiming that an armed ICE agent who fatally shot a woman driving in a car "viciously ran over an ICE agent" in Minneapolis — despite video footage showing otherwise.
Trump's Department of Homeland Security has claimed that "an ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots."
But social media users saw a different narrative in the videos posted online. People responded to Trump's comments, with many calling for a full investigation into the shooting.
"Hard to believe the ICE officer is still alive, writes the president, of an ICE officer who was not hit at all and was well enough to go run down the street to check on the woman he had killed," The Bulwark's Sam Stein wrote on X.
"Everything the Trump administration is saying about the ICE shooting in Minneapolis is a LIE. The woman did NOT 'weaponize her vehicle.' She did NOT 'attempt to run over law enforcement officers.' She was trying to drive away from the scene. ICE shot and killed her," Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) wrote on X.
"ICE’s actions today were unconscionable and reprehensible. I am beyond outraged that their reckless, callous actions led to the killing of a legal observer in Minneapolis. My heart breaks for the victim’s family, who will have to forever live with the pain caused by the Trump Administration's reckless and deadly actions. This administration has shown, yet again, that it does not care about the safety of Minnesotans. Instead of protecting our communities, they are unleashing violence–terrorizing neighborhoods and now killing a civilian. For weeks, ICE’s so-called ‘Operation Metro Surge’ has spread fear, chaos, and violence across our state. This is not law enforcement. It is state violence. It is simply indefensible, and ICE must be held accountable. That must include a full, comprehensive investigation and legal action against the agency," Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) wrote on X.
"For months, we’ve been warning that Trump’s enormous growth and reckless empowerment of ICE – which has a bigger budget than the militaries of almost every country on earth – would have serious consequences. We need a full investigation into what happened in Minneapolis. I’m horrified by what I’ve seen. ICE is not above the law," Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote on X.
"We saw the truth," user Mary Paulos wrote on X.
"How can you f------ lie so blatantly when we can all see the videos?" Joel Schamber wrote on X.
"Yes he was targeted by a dangerous criminal who is thankfully dead," film critic Rob Motto wrote on X.
"In the hospital? For what?" Scott Loffler, senior director of Lacrosse operations for the Buffalo Bandits, wrote on X.
