Why It's a Big Deal
There's a good chance that your landlord raised your rent at the beginning of the year. And we're willing to bet it's been rising steadily over the last few years, to a point that's, frankly, getting out of hand. This is just part of what has made the purchase of tiny homes go viral on social media platforms like TikTok recently, and like just about everything else, the reason you can now get this prefabricated 20-foot home on Amazon for under $7,000.
These newer tiny homes come with many modern amenities, with hookups to sewer pipes, water mains, and, of course, power lines for lighting and electricity. Even if you're not planning to scale down, you may consider installing one as an accessory dwelling unit (aka ADU or "in-law house") that can accommodate guests and visitors. You may even be able to rent it out, not to mention potentially increasing the value of your property. But what's the catch?

When you picture "tiny home" in your head, this 20-foot, prefabricated unfolding unit from a brand called Generic is likely not the image that pops into your head. Its design is sleek and modern and features a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and two sleeping quarters. It's crafted from premium materials, with all the modern hookups to the grid. It's even insulated, so it's ready to be parked in any area with inclement weather. This home is rainproof, wind-resistant, and even packs some protection from earthquakes.
Of course, this is what the product listing claims. This home doesn't have any reviews as of yet, and there isn't much information on the brand online. Still, $6,799 is an incredibly competitive price for a tiny home of this size. If you're afraid of this potentially risky purchase, you could always opt for more trustworthy retailers like Lowe's or The Home Depot, which have plenty of tiny home options to peruse.

What Experts are Saying
As popular as tiny homes are right now, many less-than-reputable so-and-so's are using this popularity to run various scams. There's a little more security when purchasing anything on Amazon, but sellers are taking to Facebook or Craigslist, which isn't moderated quite as well.
"The tiny house industry is now flourishing with absolute scammers. They are pretending to be legitimate builders, even using their name, address, and photos," says Janet Thome, of The Tiny Home Alliance, who recommends you do your research and verify if a seller is legitimate before providing them with any sort of payment.
If the risks feel a little overwhelming, you may want to consider RV living, which is another, potentially money-saving alternative, especially if you love to travel. However, if you're ready to take a dive into the world of tiny homes, this modern prefabricated unit may be an excellent and budget-wise entry point at just $6,799 at Amazon.
