Sports Briefs: Shapiro boosts San Rafael past St. Vincent
San Rafael High pulled away after a close first half for a 62-49 victory over St. Vincent in Petaluma in Monday night’s non-league boys basketball action. Luke Shapiro rained in 32 points to lead the Bulldogs.
San Rafael, which trailed 31-26 at halftime, took the lead in the third quarter with an offensive rebound and putback by David Contini. Jax Aguillon drowned out any hopes of a comeback with eight points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Bulldogs (10-7).
Novato resident Jack Ellis had 19 points and 11 rebounds for St. Vincent.
- Ika Jokhadze put up 20 points as San Domenico’s boys basketball team extended its streak to four games with Tuesday’s 80-57 victory over Athenian in Danville. The Panthers (12-3) avenged a loss to Athenian in the 2024 NorCal championship game as they jumped out to an early lead and rolled to the win. Omar Williams chipped in 18 points and Oskar Valiauga finished with 16.
- Evan Brewster scored 26 points to lead Terra Linda to a 74-57 victory against Piner on Monday night. Wes Harrison added 14 points and Cameron Gregoire scored 10 for TL (9-4), which opens MCAL play against San Marin on Friday.
Girls basketball
Archie Williams High held a a three-point lead in the final quarter before Miramonte went on a 13-2 run to close out a 49-41 victory over the Peregrine Falcons (6-5) on Tuesday. The Falcons’ Reese Patton led all scorers with 22 points, while Victoria Anderson Lynch added five.
- Marin Academy beat Fremont, 56-23, on Monday in the Wildcats’ final tuneup before the Bay Counties League opener on Thursday against San Domenico. Grace Kawaja led the Wildcats (9-2) with 10 points, while Lucy Robinson added nine.
Girls soccer
Anya Sridharan assisted on two goals then scored one of her own to lead Branson to a 4-0 win against Albany on Monday night. Sridharan set up Kara Kandakulum to make it 2-0 in the 47th minute then assisted Sophie Arnal in the 50th for a 3-0 lead. Kandakulum turned provider as Sridharan capped the scoring in the 56th minute. Branson (8-1-1) led 1-0 at the half on a 17th-minute goal scored by Julia Myerberg and assisted by Cat Howell.
- Marin Academy opened league play with a 0-0 draw against Urban on Tuesday. The Wildcats (5-2-1, 0-0-1 BCL West) face Convent on Wednesday and San Domenico on Friday.
Boys soccer
Devin Perkins and Buba Mane scored goals to help Tam to a 2-0 home win against Cardinal Newman on Tuesday. West Freau assisted on both goals for the Red-tailed Hawks (4-2-2). Tam faces Redwood in a non-league game on Thursday.
