Tottenham find themselves in four-horse race for £87m Premier League midfielder
Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on an exciting Premier League midfielder, but a deal would be difficult to pull off in January.
While a lot of the media’s focus over the last few weeks has been on the various big-name attackers on Tottenham’s radar, the Lilywhites are also looking very short of quality in one another area of the pitch.
The shortcomings in Joao Palhinha’s game have been exposed at times, while Archie Gray does not look ready for a regular midfield role despite showing glimpses of quality.
That is perhaps why Spurs are said to be exploring a move for another central midfielder, and it has now emerged that Thomas Frank’s men are involved in a heated transfer battle for a 22-year-old.
Tottenham battling three other giants for Brighton star Carlos Baleba
It first emerged last month that Tottenham were exploring a move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who has seen his stock rise dramatically over the last two years.
A new report in CaughtOffside has now confirmed that Spurs are eyeing a January move for Baleba, but the Lilywhites are battling some of the biggest clubs in Europe for the midfielder.
It is revealed that Man United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also showing keen interest in the Cameroon international.
The report says that it could take an offer of around €100m (£86.7m) to prise the player away from the Amex Stadium.
Baleba is more likely to leave Brighton next summer
CaughtOffside say that the Seagulls have already fielded several enquiries for Baleba this month, but their response has been firm.
While Brighton eventually expect to lose the 22-year-old, they have no intention of selling him during the current transfer window.
One source close to the situation told the outlet: “Brighton are fielding multiple enquiries for Baleba this month. There are teams who would ideally bring him in this January, but the message is that that won’t be possible. No one realistically expects him to stay beyond the summer, though.”
