Mickey Rourke Says He's Done 'Terrible Job' Managing His Career and Needed Therapy amid Questions About GoFundMe for Rent
Mickey Rourke is speaking very candidly about his career and his personal life after denying that he created a GoFundMe to help prevent being evicted.
On Monday, Jan. 5, the 73-year-old actor and former boxer took to Instagram to react to a GoFundMe, which had raised more than $100,000 to help pay his rent. He denied any responsibility for the fundraiser, which he described as “embarrassing.”
He continued, addressing rumors about his career and saying that he’s spent years in therapy to become better.

“Listen, I’ve done a really terrible job in managing my career. I wasn’t very diplomatic. I had to go to over 20 years of therapy to get over the damage that was done to me years ago. And I worked very hard to work through that. And I’m not that person anymore. But you know, I can’t be the one to say that. You’ve got to talk to the last several people I’ve worked with,” Mickey said.
He continued, adding, “I’m not that wild man that I was 20-something years ago, but you pay the price for your past.”
A description on the GoFundMe, which is no longer accepting donations, says that it was “created with Mickey’s full permission to help cover immediate housing-related expenses and prevent” him from being evicted.
“The goal is simple: to give Mickey stability and peace of mind during an extremely stressful time—so he can stay in his home and have the space to get back on his feet,” it reads.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the star’s manager Kimberly Hines denied that her client was unaware of the GoFundMe or who started it.
“That’s not true. But I understand that he has to say that. We’re all here to help Mickey and get him back on his feet, get him back to work, get him back making movies and telling stories and creating characters and being the Mickey Rourke that we all have known and love. That’s my goal. If Mickey doesn’t want this help from people that want to support him and his fans, then that money will be returned,” she said.
Elsewhere in the interview, she recalled telling him about the plan, adding, “I don’t think he understood, and now it’s taken on this media frenzy, and he flipped out..”
“Nobody’s trying to grift Mickey. I want him working. I don’t want him doing a GoFundMe. The good thing about this is that he got four movie offers since yesterday. People are emailing him movie offers now, which is great because nobody’s been calling him for a long time,” she added.
