Thomas Frank hints whether Mathys Tel will get a run in the Tottenham starting XI
Thomas Frank has addressed whether Mathys Tel is set to be given a run in the Tottenham Hotspur side, as Spurs continue to search for greater fluency in the final third.
Tottenham Hotspur must find a way to build on their recent defensive displays, which have seen them concede just one goal in their last three games since back-to-back defeats against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.
However, going forward is where Spurs currently look rather bland and short of ideas, having scored just two goals across their last three outings.
Thomas Frank looked to introduce a fresh approach against Sunderland by starting Mathys Tel from the off, and while the wide forward showed glimpses of his quality, it did not alter the overall attacking display from Spurs.
Thomas Frank on Mathys Tel minutes for Tottenham
With Bournemouth next in the Premier League, Thomas Frank has revealed whether he is inclined to hand Tel more game time on the left flank.
The Tottenham head coach explained his thinking around the Frenchman’s impact, the balance between tactics and selection, and whether sustained minutes could help the forward find rhythm.
Frank told football.london: “I would say that he definitely did a positive impact. Let us see what will happen against Bournemouth, but I am with you, it is also that fine balance of giving some players the trust for a run of games so they can hopefully find a bit of rhythm and also increase their performance level.
“Then the tactical approach of the opponents, which players fit that and getting the right mix and balance in the team, but Mathys in general was positive.”
Spurs left flank remains open for Mathys Tel
There is clearly an opportunity for Tel to break into this Tottenham side, as the left wing remains a problem area, with the different options tried there proving underwhelming.
Wilson Odobert, Randal Kolo Muani and even Brennan Johnson were all given opportunities on that flank, but none truly made it their own.
If Tel is to establish himself and stake a claim for a starting role, he needs consistent game time to build confidence, although with Johnson now sold and Spurs receiving a significant cash injection, his chances could diminish should a new left winger arrive.
