Time to mourn, time to embrace, time to heal on LA wildfires’ anniversary: A list of public events

Here is a sample of events marking the 1-year anniversary of the Eaton and the Palisades fires.

 

Jan. 4

Altadena Forever Run – A tribute to those who lost, those who helped, and those who are rebuilding: The 10K Run, the 5K Walk/Run and 1K Family Walk/Run event is closed for registration, but the public can cheer on the event’s participants along the way starting at 8 a.m. (the 10K run). The event was created to honor Altadena’s resilience, support long-term recovery and a fundraiser for Altadena residents impacted by the Eaton fire. Proceeds from the event itself and donations to a GoFundMe account benefit the Altadena Eaton Fire Relief Fund and the Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena. Jan. 6

Pacific Palisades Presbyterian Church: The Rev. Matt Hardin leads an evening prayer service 7 p.m. (Brentwood Presbyterian Church, 12000 San Vicenter Blvd., Brentwood). Hardin leads a morning prayer gathering at the church’s destroyed campus site (15821 Sunset Blvd., Pacific Palisades) at 8 a.m. Jan. 7. 310-454-0366. www.palipres.org/

Eaton Fire Remembrance – La Cañada Presbyterian Church: The church has “grief stations” all day and a worship service at 6:30 p.m. Location, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flinridge. 818-790-6708. https://www.lacanadapc.org/calendar/eaton-fire-remembrance-day/

Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine – A Day of Remembrance and Renewal: The restored gardens are open for peaceful contemplation, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. A moment of silence will be signaled by a gong being sounded each hour and on the hour for visitors wherever they happen to be around the lake. No reservations are required on this day. The Lake Shrine, opened and dedicated in 1950, is part of the world-wide Self-Realization Fellowship founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. American Legion Ronald Reagan Legion Post 283 – A White Glove Flag Presentation and Remembrance Ceremony: The American Legion Post 283, in partnership with the Pacific Palisades Long Term Recovery Group, hold this private/by invitation-only breakfast and ceremony for families who lost loved ones in the Palisades fire, 8-10 a.m. However, the post will livestream the ceremony portion, 9-10 a.m., outside of the post (15247 La Cruz Drive, Pacific Palisades) and the public is invited to watch. https://paliltrg.org/pacific-palisades-to-mark-one-year-of-the-january-7-palisades-fire-with-white-glove-flag-presentation-remembrance-ceremony/

They Let Us Burn – A Call for Fairness, Accountability and a Vision for the Rebuild: A non-partisan demonstration and rally by Pacific Palisades residents and business owners at a press conference that includes a variety of speakers (check the website for updated list of speakers), 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The group requests a RSVP (on the website).   Palisades Village, 15307 Antioch St. (at the corner of Swarthmore Avenue), Pacific Palisades. www.pacificpalisades.com and https://theyletusburn.com/

Corpus Christi Catholic Church and School: A noon gathering to commemorate the devastating Palisades fire (on the steps of the church school, 890 Toyopa Drive), and the later in the day, Rev. Msgr. Liam Kidney, pastor of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, celebrates the 7 p.m. Mass of Remembrance and Reflection, held at St. Monica Catholic Church, 725 California Ave., Santa Monica. St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church – Concerts of Remembrance, Healing and Renewal: The church offers community prayers at noon, followed by the 1 p.m. concert (with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and members of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, conducted by Grant Gershon), and also, community prayers at 6 p.m., followed by the 7 p.m. concert (with Meyers and the Pacific Strings, conducted by Lucinda Carver. City of Malibu’s Palisades Fire Remembrance – Finding Strength in Community – A Healing Moment: The event is scheduled to include a Chumash blessing, a moment of silence for lives lost, a remembrance poem by Charlotte Ward, Malibu’s poet laureate, and an art gallery paying tribute to first responders and community members, and a memorial area, 4 p.m. The city will livestream the formal part of the program, 4-5:30 p.m., on its YouTube Channel. Community Coalition for Altadena Recovery – Community Commemoration of Eaton fire 1-Year Anniversary: Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who formed the CCAR in 2025 to support residents and businesses, and Altadena-based community organizations, leads the gathering that includes remembrances, music and light refreshments, 5 p.m. Rain or shine event. Music Center’s Innovation Social – Reflections on Loss, Hope and Renewal: Guests at the event connect with Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality stories and also interactive 3D stations that document personal and environmental stories from the LA wildfires, 6-9 p.m. The event includes a performance by Evolve Altadena (www.evolvealtadena.org/) and TreePeople will give out acorns (treepeople.org/).
