Iranian FM: All People in Afghanistan Must Have the Right to Determine Their Own Future
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that all people in Afghanistan must have the right to determine their government.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that all Afghanistan citizens should have the right to determine their own future through a legitimate and representative government, upholding principles of sovereignty and self-determination.
Speaking at Moscow’s MGIMO University on Saturday, December 27, Araqchi noted that Iran faces several challenges with the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, which it has not formally recognized.
He highlighted key issues, including border security, water rights, drug trafficking, and migration, as major points of contention affecting stability and cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan.
Over the past four years, Iran has maintained extensive political and economic interactions with the Taliban, including transferring management of Afghanistan embassies and consulates to the group, signaling pragmatic engagement despite non-recognition.
Historical tensions between Iran and Afghanistan, particularly over water allocation and border disputes, have occasionally escalated into military clashes, emphasizing the need for structured dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms.
Araqchi stressed that while Iran engages with the Taliban to address immediate challenges, it continues to advocate for policies ensuring inclusivity, human rights, and political representation for all Afghanistan communities.
He added that constructive dialogue with the Taliban is crucial to managing bilateral challenges, particularly in migration control, counter-narcotics efforts, and cross-border security cooperation.
