Sports Briefs: Balanced San Marin rolls by Casa Grande at Bambauer
San Marin High found its stride Saturday in a 70-48 boys basketball victory over rival Casa Grande in a consolation matchup during the Don Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic.
The Mustangs rolled to a 14-point lead in the first quarter, which they extended to 24 points by halftime.
Jake Beisler led a balanced scoring effort by the Mustangs (8-4) with 10 points. Kellen Dunning had nine points on three treys, while Grant Means, Jason Gillen and Miller Morgan also each scored nine points. San Marin is scheduled to face Urban (7-3) in Monday’s matchup as the tournament continues.
- Defending tournament champion Junipero Serra rallied late to hand Archie Williams High a 64-58 loss Saturday during the second day of the Don Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic. The Peregrine Falcons built on the halftime lead with scoring from Gabe Cerio and Meezy Butler to extend the gap to 35-23 in the third quarter, before the Padres caught up late. Serra beat Archie Williams in the semifinals last year. The Falcons (10-2) are scheduled to face Acalanes at 3:30 p.m. on Monday as the tournament continues.
- San Domenico advanced to the consolation semifinals of the Don Bambauer Classic with Saturday’s 48-31 victory over International. The Panthers are scheduled to face Montgomery in a consolation semifinal on Monday.
- Junior Olen Johnson led Redwood High with 17 points in a 52-41 victory over Taft during the second day of the Damien Classic in LaVerne. Senior Leo Centeno added 14 points for the Giants (4-7), who play Cleveland at 12:30 p.m. on Monday in a consolation semifinal as the tournament continues.
- The Branson School bounced back with a consolation round victory over Cornerstone Christian Saturday in a Diamond Division matchup in the Damien Classic at LaVerne. The Bulls (4-7) fell 58-55 to Rancho Cucamonga in Friday’s opener. Branson is scheduled to face Village Christin in a consolation semifinal on Monday.
Girls basketball
Kitty White scored a team-best 17 points as Redwood High posted a 48-39 victory over El Dorado at Saturday’s SoCal Classic. Hindi Copeland added 14 points.
- San Marin High fell behind in the first half and struggled to catch up in a 65-40 loss to host Dublin on Saturday in the West Coast Jamboree. The Mustangs (6-5) are scheduled to face Liberty Ranch in tournament play Monday.
- The Branson School (8-4) dropped a 51-37 loss to Saint Mary’s in Saturday’s West Coast Jamboree contest at Dublin High.
Prep wrestling
The Mustangs’ Eleanor Fox and Catania Dekeyrel both went 2-0 with a pair of impressive mat wins during Friday’s inaugural San Marin Girls Duals Tournament. The Mustangs tied Rancho Cotate 30-30 in the first match, then beat Healdsburg, 36-24.
Fox (137) showed her skills in a comeback against Jairha Cardena of Rancho Cotate before scoring the takedown for the win in the second period. Fox got the takedown in the first period against Healdsburg’s Daysia Savage Godoy.
Dekeyrel (157) scored a takedown in 11 seconds of the first period against Healdsburg’s Zoe Zbinden for her second win of the day. She dominated Rancho Cotate’s Litzy Lopez Dorantes with a takedown at 1:42 of the first period.
San Marin’s Camilia Camara Flores (122) and Kat Castillo (172) scored first-period wins against Healdsburg, while Derilem Rodas (172) won against Rancho Cotate.
- Host San Marin beat Ygnacio Valley, 51-27, for the Silver Bracket championship in Saturday’s San Marin JV Duals tournament. Redwood placed third in the Bronze Bracket with a 35-17 win over Novato.
