Micky van de Ven reveals what he said to Liverpool’s Alexander Isak after injury blow
Micky van de Ven has revealed that he texted Alexander Isak after the Swede ended up with a broken leg from his tackle.
Van de Ven slid to try to block Isak’s successful shot on goal, but made contact with the Liverpool man with the follow-through, with the striker being forced off injured as a result of the challenge.
It has since been confirmed that Isak will be out for a substantial amount of time with a leg fracture, and Arne Slot blasted Van de Ven for his reckless challenge.
Some pundits have defended Van de Ven, insisting the Dutchman simply had to attempt to block the shot, and the defender has now shared his interaction with the Liverpool striker.
Micky van de Ven apologised to Alexander Isak
Van de Ven has revealed he texted the former Newcastle man to apologise and to express that he had no intention of hurting his opponent.
The 24-year-old revealed that it was a cordial exchange, with Isak accepting his apology.
The Tottenham vice captain told Sky Sports: “Yeah, I’ve texted him, of course. I sent him a text because I didn’t want to injure him. I didn’t want to do something to hurt him, of course. I just wanted to try to block the shot.
“And I think it was a bit unlucky how his foot landed between my legs. So yeah, I sent him a text afterwards, and I wanted to wish him all the best for his recovery. That’s what I said to him. He really appreciated the message. He texted back.”
Thomas Frank leaps to the defence of Van de Ven
Not everyone agrees that the injury was accidental, with some in the media blasting the Spurs defender for his challenge.
That includes former Chelsea defender Frank Lebouf, who called for Van de Ven to be retrospectively punished for his challenge on Isak.
However, Slot’s and Lebouf’s comments have been rubbished by the Tottenham head coach, with Thomas Frank hitting back at Van de Ven’s critics.
The Dane insisted that Isak was unlucky to plant his foot where he did, suggesting that any defender would try to block the shot in that instance.
