Wintry mix expected to hit DC region Friday along with colder temperatures
After mild weather Christmas Day, the D.C. region will be hit with a wintry mix and colder temperatures Friday.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of Loudoun County in Virginia and Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Washington and parts of Montgomery counties in Maryland from noon until midnight.
7News First Alert Meteorologist Matthew Ritter told WTOP the incoming weather system brings “showers mixed in with some light freezing rain and sleet” by the afternoon, but that “with borderline air temperatures and a somewhat unfrozen ground, icing conditions are not expected to be widespread.”
Many of the areas just south of U.S. Route 50 “will remain completely dry,” Ritter said.
While D.C.-area roads are not anticipated to be overcome with icy conditions, the National Weather Service is urging drivers to be cautious. “Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute,” the service said.
Friday temperatures will peak in the low 40s before slumping slightly to the 30s by nightfall. For Saturday, conditions will feature cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid 40s, which will carry into Sunday.
Another round of rain is forecast for late Sunday.
Looking ahead to Monday, make sure to stay bundled up. While the day will be mostly cloudy and breezy, a cold front will force temperatures to drop.
