Australia to introduce national bravery medal after Bondi Beach terror attack
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans for a national bravery medal after the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack, honouring civilians and emergency responders.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government plans to introduce a national bravery medal to honour ordinary citizens and emergency responders who acted courageously during the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack in Sydney.
Speaking on Thursday, Albanese said the award would recognise individuals who risked their lives to help others when confronted with what he described as “the worst expressions of the city.” He cited people such as Ahmed al-Ahmad, a Syrian-Australian Muslim, who assisted victims during the attack on a Hanukkah celebration.
Albanese made the remarks after attending a Christmas Day lunch at a Sydney charity, describing this year’s holiday season as marked by a “stark contrast between extremist violence and the very best of humanity.”
The prime minister said the proposed honours system would be designed specifically to acknowledge acts of bravery by civilians and first responders during terror attacks and mass casualty incidents.
He added that the government is also reviewing Australia’s already strict gun ownership laws, signalling potential further tightening in response to the attack.
The assault took place during a Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, where Sajid and Naveed Akram carried out a knife attack on attendees, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more.
The incident shocked Australia and drew widespread condemnation, prompting renewed debate over public safety, extremism, and community cohesion in one of the country’s most diverse cities.
Albanese said recognising acts of courage is essential to reinforcing national values and honouring those who stood against violence with selflessness and compassion.
As Australia mourns the victims, the proposed bravery medal and stricter gun laws reflect a broader effort to strengthen resilience, promote unity, and prevent future acts of extremist violence.
