Amorim drops major hint on Bruno Fernandes return timeline ahead of Newcastle clash
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dropped a big hint about the return date of Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.
He played on for a few minutes despite looking uncomfortable but was eventually taken off at half time.
Amorim was asked if he would still be happy if there are no new additions to his squad in the winter transfer window.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “I think if we have the opportunity to bring a player that we think that is going to be the future of the club, he is going to come.
“If not, we have Jack [Fletcher], we have Shea [Lacey]. In three weeks, we’ll have Amad, Nous, Bryan, the return of Bruno, Kobbie Mainoo, so we’ll see.”
Positive update on Bruno Fernandes
Hamstring injuries can often sideline players for weeks, making Fernandes’ situation a delicate one.
However, the update suggests the issue may be far less severe than first feared.
The Red Devils host Manchester City on 17 January and Fernandes will be eager to lead his side out for that crucial tie.
Before the Manchester Derby, United will face five games, including a FA Cup tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Should Kobbie Mainoo return sooner than expected, he could finally be unleashed in the number eight role.
Until then, Amorim must improvise to rediscover creativity and urgency from midfield.
Mason Mount and teenage prospect Jack Fletcher could both be trusted alongside Casemiro as part of a reshaped engine room.
The experimentation begins immediately, with Newcastle United visiting Old Trafford today.
It is also an opportunity for Amorim’s men to show that they can rise to the occasion even without their talisman pulling the strings.
